Getting started with the jam
Well, this is going to be a ride.
Been a while since I took part in a game jam, even more in solo. Yet, I'm getting really excited! The theme: temperature is key. Alright!
Lot of stuff went through my head. Maybe a game about growing up a plant? Or maybe a Seaman like game where temperature was used to make an environment viable for a creature?
A game about a crane.
Overheating has been present in video games since a good while. I can't think of an earlier example than turret sections in FPS in which the turret overheats after firing for a little too long. Always hated that tho, I know there was a need to limit the use of a way too buffed weapon, and when the bullets wasn't the limiting factor, this was obviously another kinda realistic way to limit it, but damn, this got old way too fast.
Yet I think I could make this work, if I pull off the right balance of using overheating as a gameplay mechanic. Need to prototype it first! I think that should be my only main objective of day one, but I may be surprised.
So, the word of the day is: Prototyping! Chuchu will be a 2D game from the side about a crane taking up box and placing them on another place, as fast as they can, but beware: the more you move, the more the crane overheats. Gonna keep it simple first, may add more to it once the game is taking shape! What I need to do:
- Nailling down the controls of a crane.
- Getting physics to work: physics would be fun, just not too much of it.
- Making box attach to the crane.
- I think that's it!
